A GLORIOUS HOPE
INTRODUCTION
Imagine you're running a race. Not just any race, a marathon. Miles behind you, miles ahead. Your legs hurt. You're tired. You're tempted to quit.
But then you see it, the finish line. And suddenly, you find the strength to keep going.
That's what hope does.

Let's be clear about something crucial: Your salvation is secure.
If you've trusted Christ as your Savior, your eternal destiny is settled. You're going to Heaven, not because of your works, but because of His work on the cross. Nothing can change that.
But, and this is important, how you live once you're saved absolutely matters, and makes a difference.
Not for salvation. For rewards.
The Judgment Seat of Christ
"For we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ, that each one may receive the things done in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad" (2 Corinthians 5:10).
Every believer will stand before Christ at what's called the Judgement Seat of Christ. This isn't a judgment to determine if you're saved, that was settled at the cross. This is an evaluation of your service as a Christian to determine your rewards.
Think of it like an awards ceremony after a race. Everyone who finished (every believer) gets eternal life. But some receive medals and crowns for how they ran.
What will be evaluated?
1 Corinthians 3:11-15 describes it:
"For no other foundation can anyone lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ. Now if anyone builds on this foundation with gold, silver, precious stones, wood, hay, straw, each one's work will be revealed by fire... If anyone's work which he built on it endures, he will receive a reward. If anyone's work is burned, he will suffer loss; but he himself will be saved, yet so as through fire."
Notice several things:
The foundation is Jesus Christ. Your salvation is secure, that's not being evaluated.
Your works will be tested by fire. Everything you did as a Christian, your service, obedience, motives, will be examined.
Some works are gold, silver, and precious stones. Service done for God's glory, in His power, with pure motives. These endure the fire.
Some works are wood, hay, and straw. Service done for selfish reasons, in your own strength, for human praise. These burn up.
You can experience loss of reward while still being saved. Some believers will enter Heaven with abundant rewards. Others will enter "as through fire", saved, but with little to show for their Christian life.
Here's the question: Are you building with gold or straw?
When you serve at church, is it for God's glory or human applause?
When you give, is it sacrificial or self-serving?
When you obey, is it out of love or obligation?
Your motives matter. God sees past the external to the heart.
Heaven: Your Eternal Home
Revelation 21-22 gives us a glimpse of what awaits:
No more death, sorrow, crying, or pain
God dwelling directly with His people
A new heavens and new earth
Perfect fellowship forever
This isn't floating on clouds playing harps. It's reigning with Christ in a renewed creation, serving Him joyfully, worshiping perfectly, experiencing fullness of joy forever.
This is your destiny. This is where you're headed.
Living with Eternity in View
So how should understanding the Judgement Seat and Heaven change how you live today?
1. Your motives matter. Do you serve for human praise or God's glory?
2. This life is short. "For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away" (James 4:14). You have one life to invest for eternity. Don't waste it on things that won't last.
3. Every choice counts. How you spend your time, money, and energy matters. Are you investing in eternal things or temporary things?
4. Christ's return is near. Jesus is coming back. Live like it.
Here's the beautiful part: "For the grace of God that brings salvation has appeared to all men, teaching us that, denying ungodliness and worldly lusts, we should live soberly, righteously, and godly in the present age" (Titus 2:11-12).
The same grace that saved you teaches you how to live. You don't live for rewards out of fear. You live faithfully because you're grateful for grace, because you love Christ, and because you long to hear Him say, "Well done, good and faithful servant" (Matthew 25:21).
This world is not your home. You're just passing through.
But one day, maybe soon, you'll see Jesus face to face. You'll be with Him forever. And if you've lived faithfully, you'll receive rewards to lay at His feet in worship.
That's a glorious hope that we have as believers in Jesus. And it changes everything.
Think About It:
How does knowing you'll stand before Christ at the Bema Seat affect your daily decisions?
Are you currently building with gold or wood, hay, and straw?
What's one area where you need to shift focus from temporary to eternal?
Prayer:
Lord Jesus, thank You that my salvation is secure in You. Help me live with eternity in view. May my motives be pure, my service be faithful, and my life bring You glory. I long to hear You say, "Well done." Come quickly, Lord. Amen.
